Manitou Island and Gull Rock Lighthouse, Keweenaw MI

Image
As I mentioned previously, BIL is now (finally!!) home from his overly long stint in the Great Lakes Region. I know he's happy to be home--or he was until he got some bad news earlier today. His 70-something-year-old mom fell while working out at her church gym with some friends. This, my friends, means that what I suspected all along is true: Exercise is DANGEROUS and bad for your health. All kidding aside, though, the poor woman broke her hip and will be having surgery either tonight or tomorrow morning. So ya'll keep her, as well as BIL, in your prayers. He's gone there now to be with her. Now, on to the fun stuff... The following photo was labled "Keweenaw Peninsula Manitou Island". Upon a little research, I have deduced that this is Manitou Island and Gull Rock which, according to Wikipedia, is just off the northeastern tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula, Michigan in Lake Superior. I kind of want to live there. I mean, look at it. It's e...

Copper Harbor, Michigan

Copper Harbor, MI, May 2012 So, BIL is finally snuggly happy back at home in Alabama with Sis1, Emmy and a seven mile long honey-do list. Or so I'm told. I haven't seen BIL since January so he may actually be a myth by now. I'll keep you posted. ;-) The above photo was emailed without his usual anecdotes but I find it fairly breathtaking. I love the ripple of waves heading to shore. The lush green trees. The almost turquoise water. The little red roofed lighthouse. It looks so tranquil. So peaceful. So very far away from crazy people. Love. For those, like me, who don't know much about the lakes or this area, Copper Harbor  is not an island. It's actually a peninsula into Lake Superior from Upper Michigan. (Did I know that Upper Michigan was a thing? I'm so bad at geography!) According to their website , this lighthouse (at least I assume it's this lighthouse!) is one of the oldest lighthouses in the Great Lakes. And that's all I really know ab...

Poverty. The island, that is.

BIL has been up north in the Great Lakes region since before Easter. He's a pilot for an aerial surveyor company. Or something like that. I don't know exactly what all that means except that he and the engineer(?) fly all over the country for various contracts and is gone for long periods of time. Being the pilot, with not a lot of actual work work , he kills a lot of his time in the air by taking photos of the ground below while the engineer collects data or whatever it is he does. This trip, I think, has been particularly interesting for him and for those of us back home with whom he shares many of his photos. Since I get to share in his explorations of the Great Lakes Region, I thought I'd share with y'all, too. To be fare, if any of the photos I share from this series seems wonky to you, keep in mind that he took them with his iPhone while he was, you know, flying an airplane . ;) I find them interesting because to be quite honest, I never realized that the...
