And then I took my cough syrup and died.

Well, okay, so I didn't really die. My computer did. Well, rather, it had a near death experience. It saw the light but came back and can now hear dead people. (name that tv show.) I was innocently minding my own business when a virus attacked and my computer went on a coughing jag and suffocated and nearly died. Luckily the Systems department is ON and resuscitated it. But not before I went home Wednesday. So I had to actually...*gasp*... werk! Wednesday afternoon. By work I mean, I had to read all the newspapers I had been neglecting recently. My fingertips are permanently black. Thank you. I took yesterday off work to go get some stuff done at the courthouse...tax stuff...one of which was renewing my car tag. (That's a license plate, to ya'll up north and elsewhere.) Actually, I needed to switch it over to my new county and renew it. However, when I got to the tax assessor's office the lady at the desk tells me she needs my actual tag. OFF MY CAR. Do I have any to...

Fog Of NyQuil

So I had big plans for the weekend. Laundry, cleaning and NyQuil. Had big plans for Friday night, too. Pizza, Ghost Whisperer and Medium. Plans?? What plans? It started Friday night when we stopped at Subway to get sandwiches. So. No Friday night pizza. And then Ghost Whisperer and Medium weren't even on. *sob* Yeah, yeah, they had the Haiti benefit thing. Which was important. But...I'm selfish. I wanted Ghost Whisperer. And Medium. So I ate a Sweet Onion Terriaki Chicken sub and read a book instead. Not a bad way to spend a Friday night. (I know. I need to stop my wild heathen ways.) Saturday. Well, I did get all of my laundry done. And I got the bathrooms cleaned. But I did it all in between NyQuil induced naps on the couch. Mostly I don't remember Saturday. And for all that staying doped up, I STILL woke up Sunday morning with the junk that had formerly only been in my throat having moved up to my head so that I sound like Fran Drescher! Sunday morning at church, I swear...

My big plans for the weekend include laundry, cleaning supplies and lots of Nyquil. Oh, and of course, the Devil Pup. Happy Saturday!

Got Storage?

For some reason, my house doesn't have a linen closet. Not in the bathroom, not anywhere. A problem when you need someplace to store your towels. At the apartment I solved this same problem by keeping the towels on a small bookcase in my bedroom. A clever solution, right? Well, clever, but not altogether asthetically pleasing. A linen closet is the one thing I actually miss about the lake house. It had an awesome one, placed conveniently just outside the bathroom door. It held all my bath towels, wash clothes, hand towels and even all my sheets. But I suppose losing a linen closet is a small price to pay for a house that is warm in the winter, cool in the summer and isn't sliding off it's foundation...among other things. For a while I used the same bookcase in my house that I'd used in the apartment. And it's functional if not exactly pretty. I'd toyed with the idea of buying an amour just for towels and linens. I shopped around and even found one that mat...

Southerner's Delight

Ya'll all know Daddy's a deer hunter, right? If you're offended by that fact or find the eating of said deer to be offending, stop reading now. If you're not so easily offended, read on. I grew up on venison, commonly referred to simply as "deer meet" 'round these parts. You call it venison and folks think you're upity. lol Anyway, I rememeber the first time I ever ate any. I'd always known Daddy was a hunter and that he killed deer and that was fine. It was a way of life. I just wasn't all that sure that I wanted to eat the poor beast though. I'm not even sure how old I was when I finally tried it but there was a time in our lives when if we didn't eat venison and pototaoes, we'd have starved. But since Daddy'd been hunting most of his life, he'd aquired the skill of cooking venison. Fried is the most common and popular way to cook it and let me tell you, there are few things better in this life than a well prepared fried ...

Single Gal DIY's

Or, "Jana's lazy adventures in assembling furniture." Before Christmas I ordered a couple of pieces of furniture for my bedroom--a round side table from Amazon and a dresser from Target. The table came in about three days after I ordered it. I assembled it the same day in about an hour. Or maybe 45 minutes, I can't really remember. That was a month ago, you know. The dresser came in the week after Christmas. The UPS guys left the box at my carport door and since the thing weighed two tons, it took me a minute to figure out how in heck I was gonna get the thing inside. I really didn't want to call Daddy for help because a) he's not in great physical shape these days b) I'd never hear the end of it and c) I hate asking for help. (Mostly C.) I ended up opening the box on the carport and carrying it in piece by piece. And there were a TON of pieces. Then I looked at all those pieces and thought, meh. It needs to acclimate to the climate of my home, right?...

My mom taught me how to crochet when Emmy was about to be born. She was crocheting the baby an afghan one night (this was back when I still lived at home) and I asked her to show me how to do it. Then I took over Emmy's afghan and finished it. I fell in love with the soothing motion of crocheting. Unfortunately, that afghan pattern (the granny square--very basic learner's pattern) is the only pattern she ever taught me. That hasn't stopped me from making several afghans in multiple colors. When Alyssa was born I made her a pink and white one, teaching myself how to make a sort of frilled edging to it. So naturally when Ethan was born Sis2 asked me if I'd planned on making him one as well. Initially, I'd decided against it. I hadn't crocheted a stitch since finishing Lyssa's and I didn't think I'd have time. But because she'd asked, I decided that must mean that she wanted one for him. So I surprised her with this for Christmas. I managed to finis...

Weird, True and Somewhat Embarassing Confessions

You know all those little "getting to know you" quizzes that circulate incessantly? You know the ones. They want to know what you ate for breakfast and if you prefer summer or winter and who do you think will respond? I admit to having fun with them mostly because each time I try to give a smart alec's answer. Or I'll add random bits that the question didn't ask for. But to be quite frank, I'm bored with them because they ask the same. darn. questions, over and over. And at the end of them all anyone really "knows" about anyone is that so and so eats blueberry special K for breakfast and most people prefer summer over winter. And no one knows or cares to guess who will respond. So I thought, hey, yanno what might be fun? Letting folks know some REAL stuff about me. Because ya'll don't know enough about my warped little life as it is, right? In random order, here are some weird, true and somewhat embarrassing facts about moi. Yes, I should be ...

Winter Storm of 2010

Image
This is what closed all the area schools yesterday, including the university. Those little random patches of white stuff. Welcome to the south, my friends. lol But you know, leading up to Wednesday night, the meteorologists all predicted that we were in for a huge ice storm--as much as two inches!!! According to them, a front was moving in overnight Wednesday night and we could expect a layer of ice followed by snow. And in a region unfamiliar with such a thing, safety was a big issue. The university made the decision Wednesday night to cancel classes and close the university on Thursday since a large percentage of their staff (including moi) commute to campus from as much as 45 minutes to an hour. Mass hysteria broke out around town and everyone and their brother rushed to the grocery store to stock up on bread, milk and food that didn't have to be cooked. Because, you know, we're usually trapped without electricity for a few days whenever an ice storm hits. And you know who w...

Howdy Strangers!

Ya'll, I so could've used this blog while I was off work. Dude, all that angst and nowhere to put it??? Misery. I did, of course, have my journal at home but somehow, I just can't seem to express myself as well when handwriting. lol My hand moves much too slow for my brain, I guess. And it tends to cramp. hehe So yeah. I'm back. I've actually been back since Monday but, you know, life's been busy. Playing catch up and all that. And wouldn't you know, the first week back has been the COLDEST this season? Prolly not cold to ya'll north of here, but pretty darn cold to my spoiled southern bones. And they're predicting ice and some snow tonight and tomorrow. Mostly ice, though. Which...ugh. I hate ice. Ice is bitter and mean. I'd much rather have snow if I have to have any type of winter precip. Although, if I had my druthers, I'druther have no winter precip at all. Color me old but there ain't nothin' fun about slogging through cold wet ...
